I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to present my Penn State University MC REU research project this past week with Shirley Clark in Austin, Texas at the American Society of Civil Engineers 2024 EWRI OMSW conference!I had a great time learning about various new technologies, issues, and lessons learned from BMP's all over the country, as well as network with so many inspiring professionals in my field; the (albeit cloudy) solar eclipse was also so cool to witness!Thank you to Penn State Harrisburg and Shirley Clark for making this opportunity possible and helping me get all the way to Texas, I've never been more excited for my future as an Environmental Engineer!

🌊🌊🌊Happy #FlumeFriday!Hydraulic jumps are a complex and fascinating phenomenon occurring in the transition from supercritical to subcritical flows. Dr Laura Montaño Luna has put together this video from her PhD research to assist students in visualising the difference in hydraulic jump properties with increasing #Froude and #Reynolds numbers. This week we are focussing on Froude numbers.Experimental observations with different flow conditions show increased aeration, free-surface instabilities, and water splashes with increasing Froude numbers. Stay tuned next week for Reynolds numbers!UNSW | UNSW Engineering | UNSW Civil and Environmental Engineering | #hydraulics

Hydraulic jump is a phenomenon in the science of hydraulics which is frequently observed in open channel flow such as rivers and spillways that occurs in fast-moving when the flow becomes unstable. Watch amazing videos of this phenomenon in different conditions.#science #hydrualic_jump #hydraulics #open_channel #rivers

Engineers Without Borders USA recently rolled out their "Environmental Justice and Climate Resiliency" initiative, and naturally, I have a ton of questions about it. Fortunately, they have granted several interviews with top officials, engineers, and program coordinators throughout the organization to answer my questions. So for July, we're having a series of episodes that I'm calling "EJ with EWB" where we dig into their initiative and their overall approach to environmental justice. (Special thanks to Jessica Janson for making all of the connections and setting up the interviews!)We just did a bonus episode, where I share my experience with the student chapter of Engineers Without Borders USA in the UofSC Civil and Environmental Engineering department. A link to the episode is in the comments.Enjoy! #engineering #environmentaljustice

🌊🌊🌊Happy #FlumeFriday! Hydraulic jumps part 2 – Reynolds numbers…Dr Laura Montaño Luna has been looking at hydraulic jumps – a complex and fascinating phenomenon occurring in the transition from supercritical to subcritical flows. These videos from her research have been put together to assist students in visualising the difference in hydraulic jump properties with increasing Froude and Reynolds numbers. Last week we looked at Froude numbers, this week we are focussing on Reynolds numbers. Stronger aeration was consistently observed in hydraulic jumps with larger Reynolds numbers, highlighting the effect of larger inflow turbulence levels on the flow aeration in hydraulic jumps.UNSW|UNSW Engineering|UNSW Civil and Environmental Engineering|#hydraulics
