Last week, I volunteered with a group of community advocates with the Tennessee AIDS Advocacy Network (TAAN) and met with Senator Mark Pody to drop off important information regarding HIV criminalization laws and asking him to consider voting for bills that decriminalize HIV, reducing stigma, and removing the punishment of knowing your HIV status.I’ll admit, the thought of going to Capitol Hill was nerve racking; although, I knew that the HIV criminalization laws weren’t going to change without meaningful discussions. You’re probably wondering why I care about HIV in Tennessee.Let’s look at some data:-Social determinants impact communities of color, with HIV disproportionately impacting Black and Brown communities in TN. While Tennessee’s black communities comprise only 16.7% of population, they account for 53.5% of People Living with HIV in the state-The rate of black women living with HIV is 13.2 times higher than white women-In 2021, 60.9% of new HIV diagnoses were under the age of 34Ending the epidemic looks like:❤️ Making routine HIV testing free and accessible ❤️ Getting People Living with HIV (PLWH) connected to quality treatment to prevent the spread of the virus. Thanks to the advances in medical treatment, PLWH can thrive and maintain a healthy life❤️ Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) indicates that PLWH, when treated, can achieve undetectable viral levels, cannot transmit the virus❤️ Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective prevention method against HIV exposure ❤️ Outdated laws and policies deter individuals from seeking HIV testing and treatment. HIV criminal exposure laws have shown to increase stigma and exacerbate disparitiesLet this serve as a reminder that raising awareness around HIV education is critical work and so is building relationships with elected representatives. It takes all of us to help end the epidemic.Time to make HIV personal. When was the last time you talked about HIV?#helpendhiv

To be acknowledged for my contributions as a black woman in the field of HIV prevention is both humbling and empowering.First and foremost, I want to express my deepest appreciation to Meharry Medical College for this honor. Your acknowledgment not only validates my efforts but also underscores the importance of diversity and inclusivity within the realm of public health. In accepting, this recognition, I must pay homage to my team at the Vanderbilt HIV Vaccine Program and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) whose continued pursuit of a safe, effective, and preventative HIV vaccine remains steadfast and inspires me to always center community in every phase of the research process. There is no scientific progress without community engagement and partnership. From pioneers in medical research to grassroots activists advocating for marginalized communities, their collective commitment has a beacon of hope in the fight against HIV/AIDS.My journey in this field has not been solitary. I am deeply indebted to my colleagues, mentors, and allies who have stood beside me, offering support, guidance, and inspiration. Together, we have challenged stigma, discrimination, and systemic inequalities that threaten progress and a future that celebrates our identities and our strengths. Yet, our work is far from over. I dedicate this honor to every individual impacted by HIV/AIDS, particularly those whose voices have been silenced or marginalized. Your resilience fuels my determination, and it is with a renewed sense of purpose that I continue this vital work until we achieve our shared goal of ending the HIV epidemic once and for all.Grateful for this incredible honor. Let us forge ahead with courage and compassion, knowing that together, we have the power to create a brighter and healthier future for all. #BoldWomen #BoldIdeas #HIVPrevention #HIVawards #HealthcareHeros #ResearchExcellence #CommunityHealth #HealthEducation #InnovationInHealth #DiversityResearch
