Want to make creamy and rich oat milk at home? this recipe needs 3 ingredients, a blender and just 5 minutes to prepare.

So here is the thing, almond milk is a winner in my house. It is delicious but only when its homemade and we started making roasted hazelnut milk as well which was yummy! But I tried oat milk at a cafe recently and it was delicious! Found out the price in the supermarket only to be shocked at how expensive it is to buy. Which makes no sense.

Which got me to work, I started reaching the ingredients needed to make it, the type of oats needed etc. The first time I made oat milk at home it was terrible! The milk was like slime and it was not milk texture. This put me off oat milk completely. Until I gave it ago once more. This time round I did a few things differently and did not treat this oat milk like I would any other nut milk.

Oat milk is a plant based mylk that is an alternative to regular milk. It is made up of oats, a sweetener and water. This is easier to make in comparison to nut milks as we don’t need to soak the oats like we do nuts to make it. Also it takes a few minutes to prepare making it very convenient and simple but delicious.

If you store it in an an air tight jar in the fridge it will keep well for 4-5 days. I have kept mine until 6 days and it was fine, you will know it has gone bad when you see the texture become lumpy and has a funny smell.

How to make oat milk that is NOT SLIMY?

The first time I made oat milk it was nasty, it became slimy and did not taste nice at all. Here are some of my tips to ensure your oat milk doesn’t become slimy which is one of the main issues with homemade oat milk. Do not over blend your ingredients. I like to blend it for 30-45 seconds until everything is well combined. I like to use ICE COLD water which helps ensure the milk doesn’t get starchy and then slimy. I also don’t soak my oats ahead of time. This is not a barista oat milk which means it cannot be steamed and frothed the way cafes do, hence don’t try boiling it or else it could become slimy. Avoid adding it to hot beverages as it has no fat like nut milks which could make it slimy.

What oats can I use to make oat milk?

When it comes to the type of oats needed to make this recipe, you need rolled oats and instant oats. I would recommend rolled oats all the way. I have made this with half rolled and instant which is fine. I wouldn’t recommend using instant all the way as it soaks up liquid easily making it prone to being less creamy and you wouldn’t need to blend it for that long. Don’t use steel cut oats as it less processed the results of the milk can be less creamy in the process.

I have used a blender – the better the blender the lesser the blender time and the lesser pulp you will have left over. I have also use a fine tea towel/cloth to strain the milk.

How to make your own oat milk?

The process of making oat milk at home is easier than any other mylk recipe, we literally add the oats, sweetener, salt and water into the blender, blend until smooth, strain (this is optional depending on the blender you use but I prefer doing it regardless) and you’ve got yourself a vegan milk to enjoy any time with anything.

What to do with the leftover oat milk pulp?

Use it to make cookies, granola, a crumble or make breakfast pancakes with them. I like making oatmeal muffins as well. Don’t throw it out as it is great to thicken stews, curries and soups too.

How to serve and store this oat milk?

Before serving the oat milk always shape the bottle to ensure that the milk is uniform as it has the tendency to separate as it is chilled. Serve it with cookies or pour into your iced coffee and tea, better yet pour into smoothies as well. I love it with cereal as well in the morning.
