CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (29-19) suffered a 9-3 defeat to Fairmont State (20-27) on the second day of the MEC Tournament at GoMart Ballpark. The Yellow Jackets gained the lead twice early on, but lost it late and were unable to recover.

West Virginia State went up 1-0 in the top of the first. Kyle Waters drew a walk in the first at bat of the contest. Mike Huber moved him over to third base with a double to left field. Nathan Paulsen then put the ball in play to bring Waters home.

The lead was lost by WVSU in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Fairmont's Quintin Reep homered to left center with another Falcon standing on first base, 2-1.

The Yellow Jackets quickly reclaimed the lead in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles into right field by Tyler Overaitis and Chris Morris drove in one run each, 3-2.

Fairmont leveled the score in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Goff hit a bloop double to shallow right field, allowing the runner on second base to score, 3-3.

The Falcons regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. An RBI-single allowed an unearned run to come across the plate, 4-3.

The game unraveled for West Virginia State in the bottom of the eighth. The Falcons tacked on five runs with two RBI-singles, a double that resulted in two runs, and a sacrifice fly that gave Fairmont a six-run advantage, 9-3.

The side was retired in order in the top of the ninth to bring the game to an abrupt halt.

WVSU will play Frostburg State at 7:30 p.m. tonight next. The loser will be eliminated from the tournament while the winner will survive to play again tomorrow.
